In 2026, SIBUR's Kazan enterprise plans to dismantle the oldest plant, ethylene–40 (E-40) production, in order to reduce environmental impact and increase efficiency. The total environmental effect will be 5%, and the economic effect will amount to several hundred million rubles per year. The dismantling project was presented today to the members of the company's board of directors during a regular meeting.
The EP-40 was launched at Kazanorgsintez in 1964. Its design capacity was 62.4 thousand tons per year. By 2019, the actual capacity decreased by 40% to 38.0 thousand tons per year. The cost of ethylene production was 1.5 times higher than the best indicator at the enterprise itself.
Due to low efficiency and the use of outdated equipment, production was stopped at the end of 2024, and it was decided to dismantle it. The actual replacement of the current capacity of the E-40 was carried out with ethylene from the EP-600 complex, operating in the commissioning mode. To increase ethylene pumping by 2.5 times to half a million tons per year, SIBUR began construction of a new branch of the ethylene pipeline between Nizhnekamskneftekhim and Kazanorgsintez.
During 2025, a project for dismantling the E-40 is being developed. The work is carried out by the Kazan engineering company Khimpromproekt. Physical work is planned for 2026. A total of 22 facilities on an area of 53,000 square meters will be dismantled.
Midkhat Shagiakhmetov, Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Economy of the Republic of Tatarstan, Member of the Board of Directors of Kazanorgsintez:
"A 5% reduction in environmental impact is a significant and measurable result that will be a direct consequence of the dismantling of the E-40 installation. This is a vivid example of a responsible business approach to environmental obligations. The project will not only achieve a significant environmental impact, but also free up significant resources by reducing operating costs. This is a rational decision that will increase the efficiency of the entire enterprise. Today, the average age of the company's industrial installations does not exceed 15 years. This indicator is the result of continuous modernization due to the creation of new environmentally friendly industries and the dismantling of unused facilities."
The program for dismantling unused structures, technological facilities and pipelines on the territory of the enterprise aims to reduce the environmental impact, increase economic efficiency by reducing operating costs, and improve industrial safety.
It involves the demolition of structures and equipment elements that were previously removed from the production process and have not been used for several years. In 2024-2025, 19 unused buildings and structures were dismantled. The total vacated area during the liberation of the enterprise's territory was 10.2 thousand m2, which is equal to the area of one and a half football fields. With the help of the obtained secondary crushed stone, the territory of the enterprise, equal to 10.6 thousand m2, was landscaped.
