According to the results of the Urban Environment Quality Index calculation, the highest score among the large single-industry towns of Russia was awarded to Naberezhnye Chelny and Nizhnekamsk of the Republic of Tatarstan, as well as Norilsk of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. A total of 55 single-industry towns of Russia were noted among the territories with the most favorable urban environment according to the rating results. The index is annually compiled by the Russian Ministry of Construction together with DOM.RF in order to implement the provisions of the May decrees of the President of Russia.

Currently on the territory of Tatarstan there are seven single-industry towns with more than a million inhabitants and a quarter of the economically active population of the republic. So, the single-industry town Naberezhnye Chelny is noted as a city with a well-developed public-business and social-leisure infrastructure and adjacent spaces. In turn, Nizhnekamsk received high marks for landscaping.

Note that one of the criteria for compiling the rating was the improvement in the single-industry towns of public urban spaces: parks, squares, streets and embankments. Improvement projects were implemented in seven single-industry towns of Tatarstan, including within the framework of the “5 Steps of Improvement” program, supported by the Single-Industry Towns Development Fund.

Let us recall that the implementation of projects of this kind contributes to the socio-economic development of the territory of single-industry towns of the Republic. Since 2015, the Ministry of Economy of Tatarstan and the Fund have been implementing joint agreements on co-financing of the Republic’s expenses for the construction and reconstruction of infrastructure facilities, which contributes to investment attractiveness and development of mono-territories.

For reference: The index is formed on the basis of an assessment of six types of urban spaces in accordance with six criteria of the quality of the urban environment: safety, comfort, environmental friendliness and health, identity and diversity, modernity and relevance of the environment, management efficiency.
