15 January 2019, Tuesday

The three-day Gaidar Forum is open in Moscow today - 2019 “Russia and the World: National Development Goals and Global Trends”. The event is attended by the delegation of the Republic of Tatarstan, headed by President Rustam Minnikhanov.

The Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev spoke at the plenary meeting of the 10th Gaidar Forum. He noted that in the first forum the main topic was the problem of global challenges facing the economy. According to him, “these challenges are now in front of us in full growth”. “The past decade brought many challenges, partly they were quite predictable, in many ways they became unexpected, and both developed and developing economies are facing them now, Medvedev said. - This is also a high level of uncertainty, which affects almost all aspects of public life, the speed and scope of digital transformation, which carries both enormous opportunities and associated risks, including the need for constant modernization of infrastructure, and this is very expensive” .

Medvedev added that environmental problems are also important, and inequality in the social sphere is increasing, “which provokes mass discontent even in very prosperous countries, and which, in all likelihood, can grow, including due to new employment problems”.

“Inequity of distribution of benefits from the development of global economy and expansion of international trade, disproportion between the growing weight of developing countries and their participation in determining the rules of international trade. This has been talked about for a very long time, but, as they say, it's still there, these rules remain the same, and this disproportion is more and more prominent”, the head of the Russian government concluded.
